DARKTIC – Inspired by the Arctic

DARKTIC consists of 12 students from the Faculty of Art and Design of the University of Lapland, Finland, with the support of the VARPU research project. Together they have a combined accumulation of knowledge from Industrial, Interior & Textile, Clothing, Audiovisual, Graphic and Service Design.

The goal of the Darktic project is to showcase the university’s student-group’s knowledge and take on Arctic Design by presenting their booth at HABITARE; Interior, Design and Furniture fair, held at Helsinki's Messukeskus in September 2018. Darktic is the event’s northernmost participator, coming from 700km away. The Darktic presents an interactive and inspiring experience for the visitors.

The inspiration behind the theme of the Darktic exhibition stand, is the continuous contrasts that can be found in the Arctic environment and how these affect and connect the people living amongst them. Whilst diving deeper into the theme, Darktic has also concentrated on the stranger and extraordinary aspects of the Arctic lifestyle, for example; the customs that might be considered quite peculiar to the rest of the world. Arctic designers are naturally influenced by these factors, so this can be seen in their work.

You can experience Arctic design life by looking into the virtual reality with a reindeer mask found at the exhibition. There are also interactive water and textile designs exhibited. Darktic zine, a limited edition magazine, is available at the exhibition, where some of the design student’s works are presented with an augmented reality application. You can download the application to your own device from this link: https://goo.gl/aT5UWo

Darktic is exhibited at HABITARE; Interior, Design & Furniture fair at Messukeskus, Helsinki, from 12th of September until 16th of September 2018.
